How to use one email address for multiple accounts (email aliases)

Creating an alias email address that arrives in the same inbox can be really useful for young children who don't have an email address or if the adult setting up the account (the Primary family member) shares an email address with someone else in the family.

Most email providers offer a simple solution to creating a alias which involves adding a + to the email address.

Let's look at gmail as an example.

If the Primary family members' email address is ilovebikes@gmail.com, other members of the family can't use the same address. Gmail allows the user to add '+insertaliashere' before the @ symbol.

For example ilovebikes+david@gmail.com. Gmail will automatically recognise this as an alias address and deliver any mail to this address into the same inbox as ilovebikes@gmail.com.

So just add whatever you like after the + and before the @ to create your alias address. There is no need to set anything up in the background when using this method.

  1. Gmail (Google): supports supports "+" aliases (e.g., yourname+alias@gmail.com).
  2. Outlook (Microsoft): supports "+" aliases (e.g., yourname+alias@outlook.com).
  3. iCloud (Apple): Apple's iCloud email service supports "+" aliases (e.g., yourname+alias@icloud.com).
  4. Yahoo Mail: Yahoo Mail supports this feature (e.g., yourname+alias@yahoo.com).
