When adding an admin user it says the email is in use

Trying to invite someone as an admin but getting an "email already in use""message? Here’s what it means and how to work around it.

🔒Why this happens

Hivepass does not allow an admin account to use the same email address as an existing member account. This is a security decision to help keep roles and permissions separate.

💡What can you do

If the person already has a member account under their email, you have two options:

Option 1: Use a secondary email

Ask the admin to provide a second email address that isn't already linked to their member profile.

Option 2: Use a dummy email from your organisation

If the admin doesn’t have another email, you can use a dummy address from your domain (e.g. johnjoe.admin@yourorg.co.nz or admin.jane@yourorg.co.nz).

TIP: You may also be able to create an alias email off their existing email address (e.g. johndoe+admin@yourorg.co.nz). This lets them receive admin emails in the same inbox, while keeping their member and admin roles separate. Learn more about using alias emails.

Make sure this dummy email is still something the person can access to receive e.g. password reset emails.
