Recurring family subscriptions
Recurring subscriptions for family memberships are a great way to increase revenue for your organisation and create a friction-free membership experience. Yearly and monthly subscriptions auto-renew and can be cancelled at any time.
βοΈ We recommend enabling flexible family mode. Across all organisations, approximately 85% of families qualify for recurring subscriptions when this option is used.

π¨βπ©βπ¦βπ¦ How subscriptions work with family memberships
Recurring subscriptions apply to the base family size configured in your membership settings.
For example:
- Base family size: 2 adults and 2 children
- Subscription price: $100
If a family signs up with only the base members, they qualify for the $100 recurring subscription.
If they add additional adults or children during signup, the total price increases and the membership can no longer be billed as a fixed recurring subscription.
Example:
- 2 adults + 2 children β $100 subscription
- 2 adults + 3 children β $105 total β not eligible for subscription
βοΈ Adding subscription options to your family membership type
- Go to Settings > Membership Settings
- Select the relevant membership type
-
Under the main tab, at the right hand side, select the subscription options you require:
e.g: βAvailable as a yearly recurring subscriptionβ.
- Enter the subscription price.
-
Under the family settings tab, check the settings.
π‘ These settings usually do not need to change, but it's important to confirm they match how you want family memberships to work.
Note: There are more fees related to monthly subscription transactions, so consider this carefully before setting up monthly subscriptions. Current fees are $0.30 per monthly transaction. (NZ and overseas). See https://pricing.hivepass.app/ for more information.
π¨βπ©βπ¦βπ¦ Flexible family mode
Flexible Family Mode allows family memberships to have variable pricing based on the number of adults and children in the family.
This is the default configuration for family memberships in Hivepass.
Default settings
The standard base family size is:
- 2 adults
- 2 children
Maximum limits are typically set higher, for example:
- Up to 4 adults
- Up to 6 children

With Flexible Family Mode enabled
Members can add additional adults or children beyond the base family size for an extra cost.
Example:
A user signs up with 2 adults but later wants to add another adult.
If the maximum number of adults is set to 3, they can add the additional adult by paying the extra adult price configured in your membership settings.
Without Flexible Family Mode
If Flexible Family Mode is turned off, the membership has a fixed number of adults and children for a single price.
Example:
If the membership includes 2 adults, a user cannot add a third adult later, as the membership structure does not allow additional members.
β When a family is not eligible for a subscription
Subscriptions are only available when the membership price matches the base family price.
If a user signs up with more adults or children than the base numbers, the price changes and the family will not be eligible for a subscription. In this case, the subscription option will not appear in the app.
Example
- Subscription price: $100
- Base family size: 2 adults and 2 children
If a group signs up with:
- 2 adults β eligible for the $100 subscription
- 2 adults + 3 children β total price becomes $105 β not eligible for subscription

π‘ Test your family set up by using the family price calculator under the family settings tab. If you move the sliders above the base numbers, you will see a 'Not eligible for a recurring subscription' warning.
β Additional family members
If family members are added after the initial signup, they receive the same membership type as the primary family member.
Example
- A primary member signs up with:
- 2 adults
- 1 child
- Yearly subscription
- Later, they add a third adult to the family and pay the additional $40 fee.
- Once the new member logs in on their own device, they will have an active yearly membership linked to the same family membership.
π₯ Tips
Always test your family membership configuration before publishing it to ensure subscriptions and pricing behave as expected.
